Kim on
"Freaks and Geeks"
Busy Philips plays Kim, Daniel's dangerous and unpredictable girlfriend
who seems to revel in her intimidation of the geeks and who tries hard
to prevent Lindsay from joining the "freaks." "My character is not mean.
She's just misunderstood," defends Philips. "She's a girl who does things
for the shock value and to impress her friends. Kim reminds me a lot of
some girls I knew in high school who were very manipulative."
Born in Oak Park, Illinois, and raised in Scottsdale, Arizona, Philips
first fell in love with acting during her third grade class production
of "Charlotte's Web" in which she played Wilbur the Pig. "From that moment,
I was hooked," she admits. Voted "Best Actress" and "Most Likely To Become
a Famous Actress" in her high school, Philips studied acting at the Actors
Lab of Arizona and completed a summer program in England at the Oxford
School of Drama in 1998. She also wrote and produced two plays for the
Actors Lab of Arizona.
Although Philips often performed in Scottsdale's community theater, her
first professional gig away from home came at age 17, when she was hired
by Mattel for the Toy Fair convention in New York to act as a live Barbie
doll. A year later, Philips moved to Los Angeles to attend Loyola Marymount
College where she studied theater. She also recently wrapped production
on "The Smokers," a feature film starring Dominique Swain.
Although she was born with the name Elizabeth, Philips says she has been
known by the moniker Busy since she was a very active 6-month-old baby.
Constantly on the go and always involved in some new project, her parents
gave her the nickname which has applied to her ever since. It even appears
on her driver's license.
Away from the set, Philips is continuing her writing and is currently
working on a screenplay. Her birthday is June 25, the same as her "Freaks
and Geeks" co-star Linda Cardellini.
